Works in 2022.
The first two paragraphs of this introduction were written in the summer of 2022. The last few paragraphs were written in November of 2022.
So far, 2022 can be summed up in three words: monumental, clarifying, and fulfilling. My first solo exhibition, I’ve Been Here Before, was on view at Tate Street Coffeehouse in Greensboro, NC through the entire month of June. I feel like two identities — myself when I was an undergrad at UNCG and me now, in grad school to become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and making art full time — have rediscovered each other and embraced for the first time. I’m beyond excited to share in this birth of new works and explore my deeper self.
The first few months of 2022 were dedicated to digital works, made on my iPad. I spent January-June creating works for the Black Women Art Collective’s exhibition, Seeing Ourselves, and my first solo show, I’ve Been Here Before.
I feel that I’ve been tested a lot this year. My work requires that I experience moments of peace strewn throughout the turbulence and stress. I’ve learned that my work has become a grounding practice. I’ve been able to share it more freely and with pride. I still want to become more comfortable being proud of what I’ve done in my art journey. I don’t like to bring attention to myself and my accomplishments, especially my artwork. It feels like just me doing what I need to do to process and heal fully. It’s for myself first. Not that big of a deal.
I applied for a residency at Chateau d’Orquevaux in August after a conversation with a dear friend. I’ve found so many other artists who’ve become friends this year and I’m excited to reflect that in my work. I received the acceptance letter recently! It feels surreal but I know I’ve earned it. The work has gotten me to this point. I’m working on knowing and being sure of myself and my abilities and knowing that this is a big, gigantic, monumental, HUGE deal. I’m headed to France! A lifelong dream of mine! My art is the reason why!
Thank you for being along for the ride. :)
