About the Artist
Hi, I’m Dee Rovetta.
My art is a promise to myself: a bright, loud, intuitive declaration that I will take up space. I will center myself and my feelings. I do deserve to rest, imagine, and dream. Since taking the leap and getting my first watercolor set after a therapy session in 2019, artmaking has brought me so much goodness, joy, and reminders that my story and voice are irreplaceable.
Artists like Alma Thomas, Howardena Pindell, Bisa Butler, Michaela Yearwood-Dan and A’driane Nieves inspire me to play with color, be vulnerable in the work, show up with authenticity and vibrancy and, most of all, relish the fact that I am a Black woman working in abstraction.
Artist Statement
I create expressive nonrepresentational paintings that are pleasing to the eye and burst with emotion. My painting process involves welcoming mistakes while giving myself a space to be genuine and free. I’m driven to create pieces that become statements through the process, not specifically intending them to be from the start. The most interesting part about my process is learning to value change and transformation over time. The human experience is complex and ever-changing and I reflect that in my process and the finished work.
I want to make genuine connections and spark conversations with the everyday person with my work. What’s stopping you from being creative? Why do you think you’re not? Being a human with all types of emotions and experiencing a vast spectrum of situations, each with its solution, commands that you be creative in your life.
Artist Bio
Dee Rovetta (b. 1995) is an artist and painter currently residing in Raleigh, NC. She finds comfort in play and experimentation with several mediums and bright, loud colors. Her journey as an artist began with watercolor, then acrylic paint with the addition of creating one-of-a-kind jewelry with polymer clay. She believes in making with intention, being introspective, jumping right into new territories without a second thought, and not expecting too much of yourself.
Mental health and wellness are centered through her use of organic drips of paint, haphazard but intentional lines, fingerpainted bursts of color, and unruly marks with markers. Dee holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is also finishing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.
